Protection against rain and bad weather: EN 343 standard for rainwear

EN 343 describes the requirements and test methods for materials and seams in rainwear. The standard applies to protection against rain, snow, fog, and moisture from the ground. The clothing falls into risk class I: no life-threatening risks, but comfort and safety are assured.

Since the update in 2019, the standard has an additional class 4. In this class, the performance in terms of waterproofing and breathability is even better.

What does EN 343 entail?

EN 343 specifies the performance requirements for rainwear. The standard tests both the fabric and the seams and assesses how well the clothing keeps water out and allows moisture to escape from the inside.

Symbol and technical requirements of EN 343

The symbol is an umbrella with two or three values next to it:

  • X value: waterproofing
  • Y value: breathability (water vapor permeability)
  • R value (an optional value): tested with the rain tower

Explanation of the test values

X value (waterproofing).

This value is divided into 4 classes. The higher the class, the better the protection. In class 4, the seams are also tested after pre-treatment.

Y value (breathability).

This value is also divided into 4 classes. The higher the class, the better the comfort during exercise. Class 1 has a maximum wearing time according to the table in the standard. Class 4 offers the highest comfort.

R value.

The R value indicates whether the entire garment has been tested in the rain tower. If there is an “X”, it has not been tested. In this test, the garment is placed on a mannequin and exposed to a simulated rainstorm in the rain tower for a set period of time. After the test, the garment is checked for water penetration.

Performance and design requirements of the standard

Garments that comply with EN 343 must:

  • Comply with EN 340 (general requirements for fit and sizing).
  • Meet requirements for tensile strength, tear resistance, shrinkage, and seam strength.
  • Be closed to prevent water ingress; openings such as zippered sleeves without protection are not permitted.

Where do you use EN 343 workwear?

EN 343 clothing is suitable for work in wet and changing weather conditions, such as:

  • Construction and infrastructure in rainy weather
  • Agricultural work and landscaping
  • Logistics and transport in all weathers
  • Outdoor maintenance and installation

EN 343 training for rainwear that protects and breathes

Rain, fog, and splashing moisture require more than just waterproof fabric. Our training covers standard classifications, material choices, seams, and breathability, including the updated Class 4. This is relevant knowledge for companies that want to use functional rainwear in accordance with the applicable standard or want to learn more about standards for workwear.
